New Coins From Mints Around the World (Part I)

The US Mint is preparing for a major redesign of its two main investment coins (the American Silver Eagle and the American Gold Eagle). The reverse of these coins has remained unchanged since their introduction, i.e. since 1986. From 2021, the silver coin will feature a realistic image of an eagle’s head. Along the rim are the inscriptions: «1 DOLLAR — 1 OZ. FINE SILVER» and «UNITED STATES OF AMERICA E PLURIBUS UNUM».

The reverse of the gold coin depicts an eagle in flight with outstretched wings and stylized rays of sunlight in great detail. There are inscriptions along the rim: «1 OZ. FINE GOLD–IN GOLD WE TRUST» and «UNITED STATES OF AMERICA». Below this you can see the words: «E PLURIBUS UNUM« and «$50. The last means that the face value of the coin is $50. The final decision about the new designs has to be made by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

While it is not yet known if other world investment coins will change their designs, Canada is already announcing commemorative products in honour of the Year of the Ox. The Royal Canadian Mint will issue an 18-carat gold coin of the same name weighing 11.8g. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the following inscriptions along the rim: «ELIZABETH II» and «D G REGINA».

The reverse of the coin features a stylized ox and to its left is a Chinese symbol meaning the name of the animal. At the top of the rim, the issuing country and year of issue are marked «CANADA 2021». At the bottom of the coin is the inscription: «150 DOLLARS».

The Singapore Mint has issued a series of 4 coins for the Kingdom of Bhutan to commemorate the Year of the Ox. All coins feature a stylized ox on the reverse, its body decorated with flowers, leaves and clouds to emphasize the charm of the issuing country. At the bottom of the rim is the denomination and the weight, metal in English.

On the obverse of all coins is an image of a valley with mountains and a river in colour. There are inscriptions along the rim: «KINGDOM OF BHUTAN» and «2021».
